Thousands demand return of Ready Salted Chipsticks to ‘make the world a tastier place’

A petition calling for Walkers to bring back the Ready Salted version of the snacks has received almost 3,000 signatures

THOUSANDS of crisp lovers, including comedian Matt Lucas, are calling for Walkers to bring back Ready Salted flavour Smiths Chipsticks.

The retro snack hasn't been seen on shelves since the early 2000s after a fall in sales meant that it wasn't worth making them any more.

Over a decade on, snackers want them back to "make the world a tastier place".

British-Australian snack firm Smiths was bought by Pepsico in 1990s which decided to pull the brand and replace it with Walkers.

Only a handful of crisps are still sold under the Smiths name, including salt and vinegar flavoured Chipsticks multipacks which cost £1 from most supermarkets.

The description goes on to say: "There isn't an alternative or an own brand out there. I know there is an alternative flavour, but the people who don't like or can't have this for any reason are losing out."

It was actually started over two years ago but hundreds of snackers have added their name to it since Sunday when Walkers was crowned the nation's favourite crisps.

Channel 5 dedicated two hours of telly time to Britain's Favourite Crisps which saw the salt and vinegar versions come it a 15 out of the top 20.

The petition, which aims to get 5,000 signatures, has already received 2,796 names at the time of publishing.

Among those demanding the return of their "favourite childhood snack" is Little Britain's comedian Matt Lucas.

The 45-year-old Doctor Who actor yesterday tweeted a link to the campaign and said: "I have signed and I hope you will too."

Crisp fan Dean Parsons commented: "They are missing from my life and without them I don't feel complete."

Helen Hyatt wrote: "I love these maize snacks and literally no one makes them any more, anywhere! Please bring them back, you'll make a fortune!"

Christopher Ramsay said: "They were the best Walkers crisps fact. And don't bring them back with 99 per cent less salt because that's the way of the world lately."

If the petition achieves its goal then Change.org will send the results to Walkers in a bid to bring them back.

A spokesperson for Walkers told The Sun: "It's great to see so much love for one of our old school Chipsticks flavours.

"We can’t promise they’re coming back, I’m afraid. We hope people can continue to enjoy Ready Salted Squares for now."

If you are looking for a replacement for the potato and maize crisps in the meantime, most supermarkets offer an own brand alternative.

Asda sells 150g packets of ready salted potato sticks for 85p, which is the same price as Tesco's potato chips snacks.

Gregg's is also selling packs of salt and vinegar crunch sticks for 70p as part of it's new line of snacks.

Let's be honest though, they're not the same.
