Six in ten UK workers do not have enough savings to pay unexpected bills, survey reveals

SIX in ten workers do not have enough money saved up to pay ­unexpected bills, a survey reveals.

Surprise costs such as car repairs and boiler breakdowns regularly trip up staff.

The 25 to 34 age group were especially susceptible, with 69 per cent regularly facing a shortfall.

Ability to withstand money shocks was strongest in the South East and East Anglia, where 43 per cent said they rarely or never struggled to pay surprise bills.

Northern Ireland had least resilience.

Only a third had little or no difficulty, found Yorkshire Building Society and Salary Finance.

They quizzed 10,000 workers.

YBS boss Mike Regnier urged firms to put staff financial well-being on a par with physical and mental health and safety.

He said: “Money worries can affect all aspects of our lives.”
