Bags and tubes of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs SHRINK – but the price stays the same
Some packs have lost up to 11 eggs per bag or tube since last year
CADBURY has quietly shrunk bags and tubes of Mini Eggs - but prices have not dropped.
Some packs have lost up to 11 eggs per bag or tube since last year, The Sun can reveal.
The packets that have shrunk the most in the last year are the "handy bags" which are now 11.1 per cent smaller.
They've gone down from 90g to 80g with three less eggs inside - but most major supermarkets are continuing to sell them for £1 as they have in previous years.
Meanwhile its giant bags have shrunk from 421g to 385g, or 8.6 per cent, with a loss of 11 eggs since last year.
That's on top of the pouches shrinking from 460g to 421g between 2017 and 2018 - when the bags lost 13 eggs.
In the last two years, the giant bags have shrunk by 16.3 per cent - but they are still being sold for £4 at most major supermarkets.
It is yet another example of shrinkflation - the phenomenon which has seen thousands of products get smaller in the last seven years while their prices remain unchanged.
Confectionery manufacturers have put the change down to the increasing cost of raw materials.
That's despite the European import price of sugar reaching its lowest level in 2017 since records began in 1991.
Chocolate giant Cadbury, which is owned by US multinational Mondelez, confirmed its Mini Eggs products have shrunk since last year.
A spokesman told The Sun that the company made the changes so it could keep its Mini Eggs products "affordable".
Family bags have also shrunk from 328g to 296g, losing 10 eggs from a packet.
They have shrunk by nearly 10 per cent since last year.
The worst shrinkflation offenders
HERE are some of the biggest brand names that have shrunk products in the last few years:
Andrex toilet rolls - In 2017, two-packs shrunk from 221 sheets to 200
Creme Egg Multi-Packs - In 2015, the packs shrunk from six eggs to five
Mars bars - In 2013, bars shrunk from 58g to 51g
PG Tips - In 2015, boxes of 80 teabags shrunk from 250g to 232g
Surf washing powder - In 2015, packs shrunk from 2kg to 1.61kg
Terry's Chocolate Orange - In 2016, the treat shrunk from 175g to 157g
Toblerone - In 2016, bars shrunk from 400g to 360g
Walkers crisps - In 2012, packets shrunk from 34.5g to 32.5g
Tubes have also shrunk.
They used to be 103g but they are now 96g - a difference of 6.8 per cent.
They have lost two eggs on average - but are still being sold for around £1.50 at major supermarkets.
The smallest Mini Egg packet available - a carton - is also smaller this year.
Cartons have shrunk from 41.5g to 38.3g - a difference of 7.7 per cent, or one egg.
But they are still sold as part of three for £1 deals at supermarkets as they have in previous years, with the price not dropping to match the smaller size.
Only two Mini Eggs products - not including its Easter eggs - appear to have stayed the same size since last year.
Cadbury's 231g Gift Egg, with an RRP of £4.99, and its 308g Treatsize Pack, which has an RRP of £4.09, are not any smaller this year.
Cadbury has also confirmed that its other popular Easter treat - a Creme Egg - has stayed the same weight at 40g this year.
A Cadbury spokesman said: "Like all food manufacturers, we sometimes have to make changes to ensure that people can continue to buy their favourite Easter treats at affordable prices.
"We’ve worked hard to ensure we’re still offering families great value for money across the Cadbury Mini Eggs range and as always, retailers are free to set their own prices."
More on Money
Cadbury infuriated fans last month after they realised the company had reduced the number of biscuits in a pack of Snack! shortcakes from six to four.
There was also fury when Nestle quietly axed the Honeycomb Crunch from Christmas favourites, Quality Street.
But not as much as when it was confirmed that your favourite chocolate selection boxes are getting smaller year on year.
