How to budget for holiday treats without feeling the pinch — plus find out how to book a bargain £9.50 break with The Sun
HOLS from £9.50 is back tomorrow and while our getaways will never break the bank, budgeting for holiday treats always helps.
Here are a few simple savings tricks to help you put pounds away without noticing too much of a pinch.
- Quids in: Every Sunday, put aside £1, followed by £2 on Monday, £3 on Wednesday and so on.
On Saturday you’ll add £7 and then go back to depositing £1 on Sunday. The savings cycle, devised by design and lifestyle site Apartment Therapy, then repeats week-on-week. That could add up to a whopping £1,456 per year! - Small savings: Lloyds and Halifax account holders can use a scheme that rounds up the amounts spent on your debit card to the nearest pound and then transfers the difference to a savings account.
The plan, called Save the Change, means, for example, if you spend £2.80, 20p will be added to your savings.
If you aren’t a member of one of these banks, you can also download an app called MoneyBox to do the change saving for you.
- Clamp down: No-spend challenges are usually done on a one-month basis and involve not buying anything outside of bare necessities. Before starting, record your average monthly spend and then note how much you fork out during your challenge — you can then bank the difference and earmark it for holiday money.
- Supermarket switches: How many branded products do you buy on your weekly shop?
Changing as many as you can to “own brand” items, or using a comparison tool such as MySupermarket to find the best prices for certain goods, could soon save you a fair amount of potential holiday dosh.
