Fans have been making their own bacon double cheeseburgers at McDonald's for years by customising a standard double cheeseburger with extra bacon at self-service kiosks or at the till.

It will be added to the menu officially from 10.30am today, and fans are very excited.

But the new addition will cost 10p more at £1.99 than it previously did to create your own bacon double cheeseburger, although prices do vary based on where you eat.

It used to cost £1.89 as the standard double cheeseburger was priced at £1.49 and bacon cost 40p extra.

But McDonald's decided to launch the new bacon version onto the menu at £1.99.

The fast food giant has also raised the price of a double cheeseburger to £1.59 for the first time in seven years.

That means you can't get around the price hike by adding bacon to a double cheeseburger at the till as that will also cost £1.99 now.

The new burger has two patties, two cheese and two rashers of bacon along with the usual onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup and bun.

It was trialled at 30 restaurants last year but now it is being rolled out to every branch of McDonald's in the UK and Ireland.

How to save money on your McDonald's meal

FROM creating a budget version of a Big Mac to dodging the sugar tax on drinks, these are the cleverest ways to knock a few pounds off your meal:

  • Make a Big Mac for £1.49 by ordering a double cheeseburger but ask to substitute ketchup and mustard for the special sauce and add shredded lettuce. It might look a bit sub-par and it crucially won't have the third slice of burger bun but it tastes like the real deal. It will cost just £1.49 compared to a £3.49 Big Mac - a £2 saving.
  • Save 30p off ice cream by opting for a 59p Mini McFlurry instead of an 89p Ice Cream Cone at the fast food giant.
  • Get £2.20 off a McChicken Sandwich which normally costs £3.19 by ordering the very similar 99p Mayo Chicken.
  • Triple the size of a McMuffin for £2.80 by using a customise feature on the self-service till to beef up his burger for £6.99. Normally, an egg McMuffin meal costs £4.19.

Burger King has a similar Bacon Double Cheeseburger on its menu that can cost £4.69 - £2.70 more expensive - but prices will vary based on where you eat.

McDonald's version is slightly more calorific though at 495 calories, as Burger King's has 470.

But it's marginally lighter than a 508-calorie Big Mac.

The new addition is making fans of the famed golden arches happy.

Menu changes at McDonald's always cause a stir.

The ever popular Big Tasty was added to the menu last month and it will remain until the end of January.

Meanwhile, a fan has revealed their top hacks for ordering at the chain, including how to always get fresh fries and why you should never ask for ice.

Last month, the fast food giant was found to charge up to 15 per cent more at service stations and out-of-town branches.
