WHOEVER said there's no such thing as a free lunch got it all wrong because there are plenty of ways you can bag free food and drink on the high street.

We've rounded up the nine best deals that will give you a freebie to curb your thirst or hunger pangs - and some are worth up to £4.25.

KFC, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Hotel Chocolat and Greggs are among the popular high street brands which give away treats to customers.

As with everything in life, there are terms and conditions for getting your hands on the goodies, which we explain below.

But it's often quite easy to bag a freebie as it usually just involves downloading a new app or signing up for a loyalty scheme, which will give you even more rewards in the future.

Here, we reveal the best deals available now.

Caffe Nero

You can bag a free hot drink of any size if you download , according to offer website .

All you need to do is enter the promo code "WELCOMETONERO2018" when you sign up for an account on the app in the "promo code" section.

Hotukdeals users say the promo code works even if you've already downloaded the app on your phone or tablet as you can enter the code retrospectively.

To make the most of the offer, order one of the most expensive speciality drinks on the menu, such as a £3.30 White Chocolate Mocha or Caramel Latte.

There's also a competition on at the moment.

If you pay with the app in a Caffe Nero shop, a picture of a Christmas cracker will appear on your screen.

You have to tap it to see if you have won a prize, such as a free drink or snack.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK)

And if you refer a friend who goes on to download the app, both of you will receive a voucher for a free side dish on the app that you can redeem at any restaurant.

We recommend ordering the most expensive £4.25 sides of sweet potato fries or truffle cheese fries to get your money's worth.

Greggs

If you download the Greggs app and sign up to its , the bakery chain will send you vouchers for free treats around your birthday.

It will also give you a free coffee worth up to £2 once you buy seven others in stores.

The most expensive drinks on the menu are a large mocha, cappuccino, latte or tea so order one of these to grab the best value freebie.

You can pay with the app and there are extra rewards if you do, such as being entered into a monthly £50 prize draw.

Hotel Chocolat

If you input your date of birth and address when you sign up, you will receive a free "birthday treat" in the post at the start of your birthday month.

Hotel Chocolat wouldn't reveal what treats it sends out when The Sun asked, but it's very likely it will be a small box of chocolates.

The cheapest item it sells is a small packet of chocolate foiled hearts for £1.60 but you may be lucky enough to receive a Happy Birthday Chocolates Message Box worth £8.

The loyalty scheme will also give customers 15 per cent off their next purchase, as well as other offers.

If you download the KFC app and join the, you can earn virtual 'stamps' when you order from the menu that will get you money off food and drink.

But most people don't know that you will receive three stamps just for signing up to the club on the app.

Three stamps is enough to bag a free side dish.

KFC advises its customers to use the stamps to get two free extra hot wings worth 99p.

But our advice is to order any large side such as fries or beans instead, as they're worth £1.59.

Krispy Kreme

The food won't be delivered so you will have to go and pick it up yourself.
