How to spot a fake email

IF you've received an email or text message claiming to be from your bank or a retailer, then these are the things you should look out for:

  • Your bank or the retailer will always address a customer by name
  • They will never ask a customer for their PIN, password or full memorable information
  • The bank would never ask a customer to click on a link in an email or text message that takes you to a page which asks you for your username, password or any other information
  • They would never ask a customer to email or text them PINs, card details or passwords
  • Customers should not click on any links in emails if they have concerns
  • Customers are encouraged to call their bank if they have any concerns about an email they have received

"I opted for the CBC oil. The winner was asked to only pay postage of £4.95. I clicked the link for the goods which did not lead to the product I had selected (CBC oil)," they told the Daily Mail.

"I became suspicious and called Tesco customer service department, which had no idea about the offer - it was a scam. I sent the real Tesco the email and pics of the scam Tesco site."

The supermarket confirmed that the email is a fake and has urged customers not to open it.

It added that it only ever ran competitions with accredited marketing agencies and would never ask for money in exchange for a reward.

It's not the first time Tesco customers have been targeted by scammers - last year fraudsters sent emails to Tesco Bank customers about a new fake voucher scheme.

Morrisons shoppers were also warned about a fake voucher scam which could con them out of their bank details.

The number of people being targeted by fake emails and text messages claiming to be from the TV licensing company is on the rise.
