With almost one in four new parents spending between £600 and £1,000 on kit for their firstborn, we round up the best tips to help reduce your finance birthing pains
IT’S one thing to be expecting a baby when you are a duke and duchess, but for most ordinary couples the financial worry can weigh heavy.
As the nation welcomed news yesterday that Harry and Meghan are to become parents, a recent survey reveals almost one in four mums and dads spend between £600 and £1,000 on kit for their firstborn.
Follow these tips to help reduce your finance birthing pains.
- Stay loyal: If you already collect reward scheme points, don’t miss out on the baby extras.
Advantage Card holders should sign up to the Boots Parenting Club and get ten points for every £1 spent (up from four points per £1).
You can get 100 Clubcard points just for signing up to Tesco’s Baby Club.
And the Mothercare rewards club baby scheme offers 20 per cent off maternity wear, £10 off every £100 spent and discounts on toys. - Borrow it: Do you need to buy every single thing? Or can you borrow or swap some items?
Join your local Freecycle community. There is a dedicated baby section in most groups and there will often be second-hand strollers or baby carriers being offered.
Cheap deals can be found on Facebook Marketplace, too. The Angelcare Baby Bath is £27.99 at Argos, but we found it on Facebook for £7, saving £20.99. - Join the club: Join the Netmums Mum Club and you’ll get a free pack of Aldi Mamia wipes, worth 49p, and two newborn nappies.
Sign up for the mum-to-be pack at and get a free George at Asda bodysuit and 24 Little Angels nappies and wipes worth around £2.50. - Sleep easy: In Scotland, expectant mums can sign up for a free baby sleeping box by speaking to their midwife.
In England, The Baby Box Co offers a similar version. To claim yours, complete a 20-minute online course at .
