Subway fans up in arms as the sandwich shop withdraws veggie patties amid fears they contain plastic
Customers are currently unable to buy Subway's Veggie Patty sandwich as it has withdrawn the latest batch of its patties across the UK
SUBWAY has temporarily stopped selling its popular Veggie Patty sandwiches over fears they could contain plastic.
Fans of the fast food chain were left furious this week when they couldn't buy the vegetarian option - and now Subway has revealed why after being pushed by The Sun.
Frustrated customers first realised they were not able to buy the patty - made of soy, carrots, corn and red pepper - at the weekend.
Some said they were told by staff that they'd had orders not to sell the sandwiches anymore, leaving fans worried that the chain had permanently stopped selling them.
But a Subway spokesman told The Sun that the Veggie Patty is not on sale in any UK Subway stores currently as it has withdrawn the latest batch after a piece of plastic was found in one patty.
The chain said it will be sold in stores again "shortly" - but it has not clarified when exactly the Veggie Patty will return.
Customers have been tweeting about the Veggie Patty shortage since Saturday, October 6.
Worried Neelash wrote on Twitter yesterday: "Subway, do you no longer have veggie patty? The Subway I went to told me the head office has told them to stop selling it."
Jen added: "How disappointing to go into my local sub to order a veggie patty (showing on the menu) to be told they're no longer doing them & no replacement.
"Ask what else as a veggie & offered tuna (not veggie) or a veggie delight (which has no substance). Poor show for veggies!!!!"
Subway's only other vegetarian sandwich is its Veggie Delite, which contains fresh veg and salad.
Amelia joked: "It’s day 2 of the subway veggie patty shortage.
"I've been to four different subways... to no avail. The kids... they are screaming.
"Soon they will no longer remember what a veggie patty sub tastes like."
A Subway spokesman said: "The Veggie Patty is currently out of stock as an individual patty was found to contain a piece of plastic and as a precaution the whole batch was withdrawn from all stores.
"We are currently resupplying stores and the product should be available in stores shortly."
