McDonald’s axes toffee and strawberry sundaes from the menu and customers are devastated

MCDONALD’S has quietly axed its Toffee and Strawberry Sundaes from its menu – and fast food fans are devastated.

The chain said it ditched the 99p ice-cream desserts flavoured with either strawberry or toffee sauce last week because they are not “popular” enough.

McDonald’s has axed the Toffee and Strawberry Sundaes from its menu – and people aren’t happy

Angry customers took to social media to rage at the decision to take the sundaes off the menu.

Explaining why McDonald’s no longer sells the desserts, a spokesman replied to one furious fast food fan on Twitter: “The Toffee Sundae and Strawberry Sundae were removed from the McDonald’s menu on Wednesday September [26] 2018, and they were removed because they weren’t very popular.

“The Government recommendations regarding sugar also played a part in the removal.”

A McDonald’s spokesman later backtracked and said the desserts were not being removed due to new Government guidelines on reducing sugar but to make room for the mini McFlurry, which launched in the summer, and the limited edition Smarties McFlurry.

The Toffee Sundae was thought to contain 50g of sugar, while the Strawberry Sundae had 45g.

Adults and children over 11 years old should only eat 30g of added sugars a day, according to the NHS.

So one of the sundaes contained nearly double the amount of sugar you should have in one day.

The Government has put pressure on companies to reduce sugar across menus by 20 per cent by 2020.

But fast food fa

ns on social media don’t seem to care about how unhealthy the sundaes were and are angry their choice to buy one has been taken away.

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “The removal of Sundaes from our menu makes room for the mini McFlurry and promotional favourites like the Smarties McFlurry, which have proved incredibly popular with customers.”

It was first revealed that McDonald’s would be axing the treats , but their removal from the menu this week has shocked customers.

Last month, the fast food chain launched two new burgers as part of its Great Tastes of the World menu.
