WAITING for your groceries to be delivered can take days - but soon shoppers may be able to get their Aldi order on the same day that they placed it.
The discounter has launched a same-day delivery service in America and experts reckon they could be poised to roll it out in the UK too, reports
The budget supermarket already delivers orders for Specialbuy items and launched the service to cover wines and spirit too in July this year.
The delivery service in the States uses a third-party company called Instacart to the get the goods to customers' doors in a speedy time, and there are already similar firms in the UK being used by supermarkets.
On the Dot, Home Run and Quiqup deliver shopping from Tesco, M&S and Waitrose to London postcodes on the same day that it's ordered.
The companies provide their own "pickers" too, who find the items you've ordered in store as well as delivering them.
Here's how to cut the cost of your grocery shop
SAVING on your shop can make a big difference to your wallet. Here are some tips from Hannah Maundrell, editor of Money.co.uk, about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills:
- Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
- Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
- Never shop hungry – you are far more likely to buy more food if your tummy is rumbling
- Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
- Use social media – follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
- Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
- Check the small print – It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
- Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards
This speeds up the service, rather than the supermarket processing the order.
Aldi told The Sun that it has no current plans to roll out same-day delivery for Brits yet, but experts reckon it's still a possibility.
Ray Gaul, from Kantar Consulting, told the trade magazine that the model adopted by the chain in the US could work in the UK too.
He said: "Using assistants who pick up groceries for consumers and deliver them at the consumers' expense seems to be a low-risk and easy-to-execute model for Aldi, especially is it unlocks growth with shoppers that normally would not take the time to visit."
Paul Yewman, from delivery navigation specialists PostTag added that there's all to play for, given that other supermarkets are already using the model in the UK.
He said: "With Tesco working with Quiqup, Sainsbury's with Stuart, M&S with Gophr and now Waitrose with On the Dot, there is a natural play for Aldi to try a limited area trial with rapid delivery in the UK."
