TESCO shoppers can now earn 10p for every plastic bottle they return as the supermarket steps up its bid to cut down on waste.
But the scheme is only available as a trial in selected stores to begin with - see the box below for the participating shops.
Borehamwood in Hertfordshire is the first store to trial the scheme from today, with a further four stores beginning the trial over the coming weeks.
If the trial is successful, Tesco says it will look to roll out the recycling initiative across the UK.
There is a catch though, only bottles up to 750ml in size can be deposited and customers will be limited to 10 bottles a day - meaning a cap on earnings of £1 a day.
You can also only recycle Tesco's own labelled bottled as well as branded bottles, such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Tropicana - own branded bottles from other supermarkets won't count.
Where is Tesco's bottle recycling scheme taking place?
HERE are the Tesco supermarkets that have been selected for its 10p bottle recycling scheme.
From today:
- Borehamwood
Over the coming weeks:
- Birmingham
- Edinburgh
- Manchester
- Swansea
In addition, from 3 October, Tesco customers will be able to reuse their own plastic containers to buy meat, cheese or fish from deli and fish counters in over 700 stores.
This will see products weighed and wrapped in recyclable paper, rather than single-use plastic bags, then placed inside the customer’s container with the price label on the paper.
Glass, metal and cardboard containers will not be accepted - only reusable plastic containers are allowed.
There's no discount for doing this, and loose deli items such as cooked rotisserie chicken, store prepared pizzas, olives and antipasti, and the salad bar, are excluded.
Jason Tarry, UK and Ireland chief executive said: “We are already committed to eliminating single use plastic wherever we can and make recycling simpler for customers.
"Today is another step in that direction."

Frozen food retailer Iceland launched a similar scheme earlier this year, which sees it pay a 10p Iceland voucher for each plastic bottle returned to its Fulham store.
Morrisons is also trialling a plastic bottle recycyling scheme in two stores, which sees it reward customers in the form of Morrisons loyalty points.
Shoppers at Morrisons can also bring in their own plastic containers for fresh meat and fish to save on waste.
