The 72-year-old from Carlisle, who enjoys the celebrations with her husband Donald, children Karen and Stephen and grandchildren Jasmine and Lucas, has been saving money with us from the start.
She said: “I used to just cash-out my fivers wallet but we are saving up for Christmas now and I’m hoping I will have £20 in my Sun Savers wallet by then.”
Here are Sylvia’s money-saving tips.
- Squeeze a saving. If we have condiments, toothpaste or anything in a tube or jar, we make sure we squeeze it to the very last drop and don’t throw anything away.
- Shop around. I like going to shops that sell quirky items and hunting around in their sales. When I see something a bit different, depending on what spare cash there is, I will buy gifts and put them aside for the big day.
- Bake sense. I have always made the Christmas cake from scratch. As the family has got older and with my daughter now having a family of her own, I make an 8in square cake and halve it with her.
- Be creative with leftovers. After Christmas lunch is finished I slice the turkey and put it in the freezer, ready to mix with mashed potato and turn into turkey burgers. I usually serve them up with vegetables.
- The penny drops. Coinstar is great if you can’t be bothered to sort out your loose change. But be aware it charges a hefty ten per cent commission if you use its machines. So if you have £50 in change you get only £45 back. Otherwise, sort your coins into cash bags and take them to the bank or Post Office, which charge you nothing.
