Quality Street quietly axes Honeycomb Crunch flavour – after bringing back Toffee Deluxe
It controversially replaced the much-loved Toffee Deluxe two years ago - but now it's been ditched
QUALITY Street has quietly ditched the Honeycomb Crunch flavour - two years after it controversially replaced the much-loved Toffee Deluxe.
The chocolate-covered toffee was restored to tins and tubs last year after uproar from fans, bringing the total number of Quality Street sweets to 13.
But the Honeycomb Crunch - which was a bite of milk chocolate containing shards of honeycomb - has now been removed from tubs and selection boxes altogether.
Fans were distraught when the treat replaced old favourite Toffee Deluxe, which was created in 1919 as a sweet sold on its own and was included in the first ever box of Quality Street when it was invented in 1936.
It took a year for Quality Street to to tins and tubs.
But in a blow to lovers of the newest flavour, Nestlé - the makers of Quality Street - has quietly removed Honeycomb Crunch sweets from its assortment to bring the total number of different sweets back down to 12.
If you're sad that you won't get to enjoy a Honeycomb Crunch this year, Nestlé does still sell the flavour as a chocolate bar.
Timeline of the Honeycomb Crunch
The Honeycomb Crunch only lasted two years. Here's why it's being axed:
- September 2016: The Toffee Deluxe - one of the first sweets when Quality Street launched in 1936 - is axed and replaced by the new Honeycomb Crunch. The sweet brand says it's because customers complained there were two many toffee flavours. There is widespread outrage amongst fans of the old favourite.
- November 2016: Nestle refuses to bring back the Toffee Deluxe permanently but it is included in a limited edition tin sold at Tesco stores in December 2016.
- October 2017: Nestle brings back the Toffee Deluxe and keeps the Honeycomb Crunch too, bringing the total number of sweets in a tin to 13. Fans are delighted to see the old favourite return.
- September 2018: Quality Street axes the Honeycomb Crunch - but it's still available as a chocolate bar.
The sweet brand defended removing the flavour by saying its assortment of chocolates changes "from year to year".
A spokesman said: "The Quality Street assortment has never been static."
He added: "The Honeycomb crunch was a new sweet added to celebrate our 80th birthday celebrations back in 2016.
"It’s still available as part of a single chocolate bar for this year but won’t appear in tubs and tins.
This year’s assortment still features 12 classic and much loved Quality Street sweets and we have taken the opportunity to add more of the sweets we know are people’s favourites."
