TESCO'S new bargain chain Jack's is set to take on Alid and Lidl - but how do its prices compare?

The Sun compared the price of 14 everyday branded and non-branded products at Aldi, Lidl and Tesco and found that in 10 cases Jack's either had the lowest price or matched the cheapest price.

Examples of where Jack's tops the tables include sirloin steaks.

One British beef sirloin steak cost just £2.49 at Jack's, compared to £2.65 at Lidl, £3.39 at Aldi, and £3.80 at Tesco.

Another example is eggs, which cost just 60p for six at Jack's, compared to 75.6p at Aldi (you have to buy a box of 15 eggs), 80p at Lidl and 89p at Tesco.

Jack's also has a number of joint cheapest prices. When it comes to teabags, for example, Jack's and Aldi both charge 85p for 80 bags.

In comparison, Lidl charges £1.09, while Tesco sells 80 own-brand teabags for £1.10.

But Jack's isn't always the cheapest supermarket.

On own-branded washing-up liquid, it was the priciest of the four supermarkets; charging 60p for a 450ml bottle.

Tesco charges 50p for the same-sized bottle, while Aldi and Lidl both charge 49p for a larger 500ml bottle.

Customers will need to compare prices to make sure that they are really getting the best deal.

Jack's will sell about 2,600 different products in-store, of which 1,800 will be Jack's own brand and 700 will be well-known brands such as Tate & Lyle and Kingsmill.

Stores have a focus on selling British produce with eight out of 10 products made, grown or produced in the UK.

The first branch was revealed by Tesco boss David Lewis in the small Cambridgeshire town of Chatteris this morning.

How do Jack's other products stack-up?

As well as food, Jack's will have a WIGIG (when it's gone it's gone) aisle.

This is similar to Aldi's "Special Buys" and will contain non-food items, such as pet products, candles, and electricals goods.

Here's how some of Jack's new WIGIGs compare.

  • HP Stream 14-ax002na laptop with 14-inch display - £125. Google Shop reveals the lowest price elsewhere to be £174 - so that's a £49 saving.
  • Dyson V7 Animal vacuum cleaner - £200. Google Shop reveals the lowest price elsewhere to be £278 - so that's a £78 saving.
  • Progress forged three piece pan set - £35. Google Shop reveals the lowest price elsewhere to be £32 - so you're paying £3 more at Jack's.
  • Cat bed - £10. Google Shop reveals the lowest price elsewhere for a similar cat bed is £5 - so you're paying £5 more at Jack's.

It will open to the public tomorrow, alongside a store in Immingham in Lincolnshire.

Tesco plans to open a further 10 to 15 Jack's stores over the next six months but it won't divulge where these will be.

The new chain is named after Jack Cohen, who founded Tesco 99 years ago.

Shoppers will not be able to earn Tesco Clubcard points when shopping in Jack's stores - and there will be no website.

Aldi and Lidl bargain retailers have nearly doubled their market share to 13.1 per cent in the last five years, forcing other supermarkets to slash prices and close unprofitable stores.

Tesco is also facing the prospect of losing its spot as the biggest supermarket in Britain - from the potential merger between rivals Asda and Sainsbury's.

The two announced earlier this year that they plan to merge in a blockbuster £15billion deal - which would see them leapfrogging Tesco to become the nation's largest supermarket chain.

Reports that Tesco was planning to open the new stores, with prices to rival Lidl and Aldi, first surfaced in February.

Tesco recently said it was going to  "simplify"  the structure of its store teams putting 1,700 jobs at risk in the process.

Earlier this month it closed Tesco Direct, its online retail platform for tech, toys, clothes and homeware.
