Shoppers are left disappointed as Asda becomes the latest supermarket to scrap its price match scheme
From next month, the supermarket will be ditching its popular price match scheme scheme, but it promises to offer customers low prices in return.
ASDA has announced that after eight years it will be scrapping its popular price match scheme to focus on offering customers lower prices.
Tesco announced a similar move in July when it too ditched its price match policy in favour of lower prices on every day items.
In an announcement to customers, the supermarket said that despite scrapping the scheme it is still promising to keep prices low.
A notice on the supermarket's website said: "Over the past 12 months we have invested over £100million in lowering the price of 1,000's of the products our customers love the most. And there's more to come.
"We're committed to focusing our investments in to lowering prices; and keeping them low. This month you'll see another round of price reductions from us - and more after that; look out for them in your local Asda store."
But it seems customers are not happy with the announcement and many took to Twitter to vent their frustration.
One customer said: "It was the one thing that made me shop at Asda. Now I'll have to say goodbye to Asda in return."
Another said: "Furious with @Asda for removing the Price Guarantee Scheme. It was my main incentive for going there."
Last year we revealed how one shopper used the price match to save up to £1,200 a year on her food shop.
This year Asda announced that it would be merging with Sainsbury's in a huge £15billion deal.
The merger will create the the UK's biggest supermarket chain, accounting for around 31 per cent of the grocery market.
