From next month, the supermarket will be ditching its popular price match scheme scheme, but it promises to offer customers low prices in return.

ASDA has announced that after eight years it will be scrapping its popular price match scheme to focus on offering customers lower prices.

Tesco announced a similar move in July when it too ditched its price match policy in favour of lower prices on every day items.

At present, if your shop isn't 10 per cent cheaper than rival supermarkets Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco or Waitrose - Asda will pay you the difference.

You just enter the barcode number on your receipt online where Asda will check if your comparable shop would have been cheaper elsewhere.

If your shop was more than 10 per cent less elsewhere, you are provided with a voucher to use next time you're in store.

But the store's price guarantee will now end on October 3, with vouchers received up to this date available to redeem for the following 28 days.

How to cut the cost of your grocery shop?

HERE's how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills:

  • Create a budget- Allocate a set amount for your food shop every week
  • Stick to a list - Only buy the items that you need for the week. If something isn't on your list, don't put it in your trolley
  • Avoid pre-chopped fruit and veg - These are usually a lot more expensive than buying your fruit and veg whole
  • Shop around - Uses websites like to see where you can get the lowest prices
  • Make use of loyalty cards- These offer a variety of vouchers and points that you can spend in store. They all work slightly differently - so have a look around to see which offers the best perks for you

In an announcement to customers, the supermarket said that despite scrapping the scheme it is still promising to keep prices low.

A notice on the supermarket's website said: "Over the past 12 months we have invested over £100million in lowering the price of 1,000's of the products our customers love the most. And there's more to come.

"We're committed to focusing our investments in to lowering prices; and keeping them low. This month you'll see another round of price reductions from us - and more after that; look out for them in your local Asda store."

But it seems customers are not happy with the announcement and many took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

One customer said: "It was the one thing that made me shop at Asda. Now I'll have to say goodbye to Asda in return."

Another said: "Furious with @Asda for removing the Price Guarantee Scheme. It was my main incentive for going there."

Last year we revealed how one shopper used the price match to save up to £1,200 a year on her food shop.

This year Asda announced that it would be merging with Sainsbury's in a huge £15billion deal.

The merger will create the the UK's biggest supermarket chain, accounting for around 31 per cent of the grocery market.

How will the Sainsbury’s Asda merger work and what’s happened to Walmart’s share price?
