Brits are turning their back on traditional teas and opting for herbal blends instead.
Despite centuries of tradition behind the drink, nearly 870 million fewer cups were drank last year.
The slump comes as the traditional black brews have lost popularity, but sales of pricey premium teas and fruit or herbal blends have been rising, The Times reports.
However, the UK bought 5.7million fewer pounds of tea in the year to May 2018, the biggest fall in four years.
This means roughly 866.7million fewer cups were drunk over the year according to retail analysts Kantar Worldpanel.
As the taste of shoppers shifts retail giants have changed what they stock, with Tetley Tea losing nearly 40 per cent of it’s shelf space in Tesco to fruit and herbal teas.
