We taste test the nation’s top pizza takeaways – did your favourite win?
We invited Daniel Young, author of Where To Eat Pizza, and his seven-year-old son David, to rate seven pepperoni pizzas out of five
IT sounds hard to swallow but the average Brit eats 731 pizzas – or 5,847 slices – in their lifetime.
Pepperoni is the UK’s favourite topping followed by cheese and tomato and meat feast, a poll by found.
Amy Jones invited Daniel Young, author of Where To Eat Pizza, and his seven-year-old son David, pictured, to tuck into seven pepperoni pizzas from leading takeaways and rate each one out of five.
PIZZA EXPRESS American
(£11.55, 9in, 844 cals)
Daniel says: “This has a good stretch to the dough. It’s not the best quality I’ve tried but there is a good spicy, paprika flavour that packs a real punch. It’s definitely pepperoni with attitude. You can see why some people love this pizza.”
Verdict: 4/5
David says: “Wow – this is too spicy for me. The pizza is nice but I don’t like it to be this hot.”
Verdict: 3/5
PIZZA HUT - Pepperoni Feast
(£19.49, 13in, 2,264 cals)
Daniel says: “The pepperoni is not bad and has a nice spiciness to it – but I’m afraid that’s the only positive thing I can say about it. The cheese is bland and stodgy while the dough is really quite unpleasant and spongy.”
Verdict: 2/5
David says: “At first I thought it tasted quite nice because the pepperoni contained a lot of flavour – but the dough is really bad.”
Verdict: 1/5
PIZZA GOGO - Double Pepperoni
(£17.99, 15in, 2,200 cals)
Daniel says: “This is the ugliest pizza of the lot. The cheese is so burned that it’s turned brown. The dough has the texture of foam board. There’s no art to this one. It’s everything that’s bad about takeaway pizza.”
Verdict: 0/5
David says: “I don’t think it’s that bad. I don’t mind the burnt cheese – I think the mozzarella taste is nice. But I agree with Dad on the dough – it’s really not good.”
Verdict: 2/5
PAPA JOHN’S Double Pepperoni
(£18.99, 14in, 2,790 cals)
Daniel says: “This is the greasiest of the lot. The pepperoni is nice and spicy and the rounded edges of the slices form little cups of grease. This is the sort of pizza you would crave if you’d had a few too many the night before.”
Verdict: 2/5
David says: “I have to disagree with Dad on this one. I actually think it is really tasty. The dough isn’t amazing but it has a lot of flavour.”
Verdict: 4/5
DOMINO’S Pepperoni Passion
(£19.99, 13½in, 2,280 cals)
Daniel says: “Surprisingly for a fast-food pizza, the crust has a nice fluffiness and there’s very good pepperoni coverage. I am tasting pepperoni in every bite.”
Verdict: 4/5
David says: “I think it’s OK. There is nothing really wrong with it, but there is no standout flavour. I have had better pizza.”
Verdict: 3/5
ASK Stromboli
(£10.50, 10in, 881 cals)
Daniel says: “With a flat crust you want to get a bit of crispness, but this is depressingly soggy. The pepperoni isn’t bad but overall this is a bit of a disappointing pizza. It certainly won’t fill you up.”
Verdict: 1/5
David says: “I think this pizza looks the worst – it’s a really sad, pale colour. The pepperoni is nice but doesn’t save it.”
Verdict: 2/5

FRANCO MANCA Tomato, Mozzarella, Cured Chorizo
(£7.70, 12in, 850 cals)
Daniel says: “This pizza uses cured chorizo instead of pepperoni but the flavour isn’t dissimilar. The chorizo has the same spiciness and paprika zing you would want for the more usual topping. What sets this pizza apart for me is the dough – it’s chewy and the crust has lovely air bubbles and crispy bits.”
Verdict: 5/5
David says: “This is my favourite too. You can taste that the ingredients are a better quality. Unlike some of the other pizzas, you can really taste the tomato.”
Verdict: 5/5
