Bicarbonate of soda — or baking soda — costs as little as 69p a pot in Asda. But it could save you a bundle on cleaning products, weed killer and other household goods.
This is NOT baking powder, which combines baking soda with the acidic ingredient cream of tartar used for making cakes. So make sure you pick up the right one!

- Londoner TANYA THOMPSON says: “Put a piece of lemon into a bowl, add two tablespoons of bicarb and a cup of water. Put in your microwave on full power for two minutes. The microwave will look like new.”
- SEEMA SINGH, from Southall in West London, says: “Avoid smelly trainers after the gym by sprinkling bicarb inside them. This combats odours — but tap it out before wearing them again!”
- ELIZABETH SMITH, from Waltham Cross, Herts, says: “Half a potato dipped in baking soda is a great scourer, especially for removing rust.”
- SAMANTHA HARRINGTON, from Mattishall, Norfolk, says: “Instead of spending money on limescale tablets for your washing machine, add a teaspoon of bicarb to the powder tray every wash. It will do the same thing.”
