When does the halogen bulbs EU ban start, are LED’s more energy efficient and how much do they cost?
Millions of halogen bulbs are sold each year in Britain and many homes still have them
THE EU ban on halogen lightbulbs is now in effect.
Eurocrats decided to eliminate them to hit green targets after first banning old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs in 2009.
When did the halogen bulb ban begin?
The halogen lightbulb ban took effect on September 1, 2018.
Householders now face paying nearly £150 to replace existing bulbs with more expensive LED lights.
The ban has come as a surprise to many Brits - a survey found two in three people had no idea halogen bulbs were being axed.
Are LEDs more energy efficient?
LED bulbs are said to be better value because they use a fraction of the electricity and obviously that helps reduce out carbon footprint and fight climate change.
They should also last up to 15 years.
Also, they are much brighter, although some claim the light LED bulbs give off is way too harsh.

How much do LEDs cost?
Halogen bulbs cost about £2 each but LED versions are between £4 and £7.
With 34 light bulbs in an average home the cost would rocket from £68 to £134.
Critics argue forcing LEDs on consumers and banning cheaper alternative light bulbs will come across as heavy-handed.
This in turn can lead to resentment over green policies.
But the Energy Saving Trust reckons the move will help homes cut electricity bills which are already high and a drain on a households spending power.
They point out the LED bulbs use about a fifth of the energy burned by halogens.
