Best supermarket for cheese revealed in top industry taste test

Morrisons was praised for its traditional British cheese recipes and they start from £2 a pack

MORRISONS has been voted the best cheesemonger in Britain, in top industry awards.

The supermarket took first place in the categories for the six classic British cheeses at International Cheese Awards, held in Nantwich. They swept the board winning 29 gold awards- the most won by any British retailer.

They were praised for their commitment to traditional British cheese products- Farmhouse Cheddar, Wensleydale, Lancashire, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester and Stilton.

Morrisons are the only supermarket to source their Wensleydale cheeses from Wensleydale in Yorkshire.

Judges commented on the “shale texture and creamy clean flavour” of the traditional Wensleydale, which costs £2 for 250g.

They also noted the “typical crumbly texture” of their Lancashire cheese, which costs £2.20 for 200g.

This is the first time the supermarket giant has won the top prize, with Waitrose taking first place spot for the last four years. This year Waitrose took the second place spot at the awards.

Morrison’s cheese quality expert, Russell Hagata, said the supermarket “seek out the very best traditional recipes” for their regional cheeses.

“Our award winning Rutland Red Leicester is cloth bound and sealed with butter to give it an authentic taste.

“Our Double Gloucester is traditionally made with open vats and hand salted giving a buttery-creamy profile.

“We hope customers will love these cheeses as much as we do.”

This isn’t the first time that Morrisons have been one step ahead when it comes to cheese.

Earlier this month they started selling a cheddar variety infused with the Carolina Reaper- the world’s hottest chilli with an average heat level that is 300 times more than a Jalapeño pepper.

They said launched the spicy cheddar in time for the BBQ season, for their customers who like their burgers with that extra kick.

The supermarket also picked up another award earlier this month for their £8 rib-eye steak, which won gold at the 2018 World Steak Challenge.

Morrisons is selling a £7 Royal wedding cake - and its the same flavour Meghan and Harry will have when they marry
