Aldi’s £10 gin beats Heston Blumenthal’s £25 from Waitrose in top taste test
The budget supermarket's Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin scooped silver in an international blind taste test while Heston's finished with bronze
A BOTTLE of budget gin from Aldi has beaten Heston Blumenthal's gin in an international taste test - and it costs more than half the price.
The Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin from the German supermarket scooped silver at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, while the posher plonk finished with a bronze.
Heston's Citrus Sherbert Lazy Gin costs £24.99 and is made exclusively for , while spirit costs £15 less at just under a tenner.
The TV chef's booze is already infused with a lemony zing, and Waitrose advises that it's served: "Simply add Mediterranean tonic, ice and serve with a stick of liquorice, no need for the slice."
But the fancy marketing meant nothing in the blind taste test where the judges were unaware of what brand they were drinking.
Lidl's Hortus Citrus Garden gin which costs £15 also scooped silver, beating of the competition from the Michelin-starred chef.
More than 600 gins were entered into the copetition, and own brand gins from Morrisons and Spar also left with a silver award.
The design of the Oliver Cromwell booze is similar to the iconic bottle of Gordon's and it was reflected in taste too because the brand was also awarded silver.
Top British brand Beefeater was awarded and "outstanding silver" tag, while Plymouth and Martin Miller also took away silver and premium gin Bombay Sapphire was bronze.
The overall winner in the gin category was Ki No Bi Kyoto dry gin from Japan which costs £44.95 a bottle.
