Rare Peter Rabbit Beatrix Potter 50p coin sells for £840 on eBay – have you got one in your spare change?
RARE 50p coins featuring Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit are selling for up to £840 on eBay.
The silver coins are from 2016 when the Royal Mint released 9.6million of them into circulation to commemorate 150 years since the famous author’s birth.
There are reports that one of the coins sold on but this isn’t true, as it was relisted after receiving just one winning bid.
This means that whoever won the auction didn’t part with the huge sum and the seller tried to flog it for a second time on the site.
One lucky seller did manage to part with the coin for £840 after receiving five bids in July this year.
Colour versions of the coin sell for hundreds of pounds on the auction website too.
It’s not the only popular 50p coin. In the past, we’ve revealed the most valuable sought after coins after one seller pocketed £5,000 from flogging his Battle of Hasting’s 50p.
The most popular 50p is one with a Kew Gardens design – it is worth up to £160 on eBay.
Other rare 50p coins usually achieve a premium of around 10 to 12 times face value, or about £5 to £6, when they are sold on.
In February this year the Royal Mint launched a new range of Beatrix Potter coins, featuring Flopsy Bunny, Mrs Tittlemouse, The Tailor of Gloucester and a second Peter Rabbit design.
Previous one’s included Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten and Jeremy Fisher.
The coins were created by designer Emma Noble who has previously worked on pieces commemorating the Diamond Jubilee and Remembrance Sunday.

Potter’s children’s book The Tale Of Peter Rabbit – the first to feature the character – was an instant success after being picked up in 1902 by British children’s publisher Frederick Warne & Co.
Peter Rabbit – arguably the author’s most celebrated creation – went on to appear in five more books by the author who became linked with the Lake District.
The story has never been out of print since and more than 45 million copies have been sold worldwide.
