Carrot crisis looms as lack of rain hits crops in the UK

SHOPPERS could see a carrot shortage at the supermarkets as the hot and dry weather has put Britain's crops at risk.

Carrot growers are warning that they are are days away from from watching their crops "keel over from drought".

The Chairman of the British Carrot Growers Association Roger Hobson told that it is "inevitable" that shoppers will see a price hike later this year thanks to the warm weather.

He warned that some growers are in need of 20 days of rain to save the carrot crops as they battle with dwindling water supplies.

The UK is normally up to 97 per cent self-sufficient when it comes to carrots but experts reckon that this year supply could drop by up to 40 per cent this year.

The summer's shortage could have an impact on what's on supermarket shelves for up to 11 months.

Roger warned that we will have to rely on "substantial imports" in order to keep up with demand.

The Environment Agency has already issued stop notices to some farmer's who have permission to irrigate their fields with water from rivers and lakes.
