We share tips from our experts on how to eat cheaply on a caravan holiday — plus win £15,000 on the Sun Savers Raffle

A recent study revealed we spend £161 on last-minute essential items such as snacks before we go away

IT’S easy to overspend on food for your caravan holiday.

A recent study by American Express found that on average, we pay £161 for last-minute essentials such as food and snacks in preparation for these breaks.

I recently had an email from a Sun Saver who is taking his family of four on their first caravan getaway to Cornwall for four nights.

He is worried that costs will stack up and wants to know how to feed his lot without packing the whole fridge, or eating out daily.

So I asked a panel of experts for tips on how to cater for your caravan crew just like you’re at home . . .

LISA MINOT, Travel Editor at The Sun, says: “One-pan meals are a good idea — and save on the washing up.

“A curry can be made quickly and cheaply using chicken thighs, lots of veg and a jar of paste to avoid having to bring spices.

“Spaghetti and meatballs are another favourite and you can make them for pennies using mince, onion and a few spices.

“A barbecue is essential, whether over an open fire or using a disposable one. I love to make kebabs that the kids can eat straight from the skewers — saving washing up again. And there has to be marshmallows!”

PETE HILL, from West Bromwich, West Mids, dubbed “Mr Sun Holiday” after going on 100 of our bargain breaks, says: “There’s nothing better than starting your day with a fried breakfast.

"Pack bacon, eggs, bread and baked beans for a real morning feast, keeping you full until dinner time.

“Also take salt, pepper, teabags, washing powder, dishwasher tablets and bin bags, so you don’t have to buy expensive versions on-site.”

CLAIRE HALL, mum-of-two from Dartmouth, Devon and blogger at , says: “Warm up four pre-baked frozen jacket spuds on the barbecue and add a tin of something from the store cupboard.

“Tuna or beans always go down well with my kids. Serve with a side salad, or vegetable sticks for little ones, and you have a meal for four for about a fiver.”

JOOLS MAURO, who lives in a caravan in Lymington, in Hampshire’s New Forest, says: “Make chilli or another one-pot meal at home and freeze it. It will stay frozen for at least two days in a good coolbag or box. Just reheat it and serve.

“Canned hot dogs heated in a pan are always a winner — quick and no fuss.

“For veggies, stuff peppers with onions, tinned salad beans, rice and a knob of butter. Wrap in foil and cook at the edge of a camp fire.”

SHARON NORTH, from Worthing, West Sussex, says: “If you get pen ink on a white shirt, use clear hand sanitizer on the mark and rub it as it will lift. Then wipe off excess and repeat until it is barely visible, then pop it in the washing machine”
