CLOSING TIME

Hummus Bros goes into administration due to ‘tough times on the high street’

The restaurant chain has six branches in central London and blames a "perfect storm" of rising business rates, a weak pound and reduced demand for its closure

LEVANTINE fast-food chain Hummus Bros has gone into administration after 13 years of business.

The company has put it down to rising costs, reduced demand and over-supply in the market.

The chains has six restaurants in central London, including Cheapside, Wardour Street and Exmouth Market.

In a statement published on the website and on social media, it said that it decided to close its doors "very reluctantly".

It had been exploring "ways to pivot away from the high street", like working with canteens of large corporate companies as well as taking vans to street markets but the business "didn't generate enough cash".

Hummus Bros wrote: "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the business didn’t generate enough cash to keep running until we changed course so, very reluctantly and sadly, we had to close the business.

"Thank you so much for 13 wonderful years of business! It has been a great & unforgettable ride."

Hummus Bros specialised in middle-eastern foods, serving up great platters of chickpea-based meals.

Last year, the food-chain tried to raise the funds to expand on crowdfunding site Seedrs and managed to get £125,000 in donations.

But despite this, the number of restaurants stayed at six and there were no plans to announce another location.

It's the latest blow to the high street, as retailers struggle with rising rent costs, fall in consumer demand and a weaker pound.

Italian restaurant Prezzo announced plans to close 94 restaurants putting 500 staff out of a job as creditors deal with a restructure.

Posh burger chain Byron Burger may have to shut 20 stores to keep the business afloat, putting hundreds of jobs at risk.

Poundworld's future is in the balance as it waits for a buyer to save the struggling business.

Toys R Us and Maplin have both collapsed, while New Look is to axe 60 stores across the country as it tries to restructure its business, putting more than 900 jobs at risk.
