Having a baby doesn’t have to be a great financial struggle – just follow these tips

IT’S not cheap to start a family – but how much stuff for your new child do you really need?

A baby could cost as much as £7,200 or as little as £1,600 in their first year, according to the Money Advice Service.

Keeping money in your pocket is child’s play — as our Sun Savers explain here . . .

  • CARON DAVIES, from Rayleigh, Essex, says: “I recycle my son’s old baby-milk powder dispenser pot by using it as a snack pot for when we’re out and about.”
  • LIZ WILLY, from Maidstone, Kent, says: “Instead of using baby wipes, keep a wet flannel inside an old ice-cream tub. It’s something I did with my children when they were young and I still do it now.”
  • MICHELLE HARRISON, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, says: “Get in touch with baby- product companies to get free samples. Also, if you call and compliment a product, they often send you freebies for contacting them.”
  • LESLEY MOORE, from Newcastle, says: “Buy cotton buds and cotton pads from the baby section. They are exempt from VAT and the packs are much bigger.”
  • SUZANNE SUTHERLAND, from Hull, East Yorks, says: “Baby lotions are extremely good value and if they’re suitable for delicate baby skin, then they’re definitely OK for us to use too. Now you can ditch your expensive anti-ageing cream.”
  • JANE EASTERBY-GREEN, from Cockfosters, North London, says: “Reuse the hard plastic seals on baby-wipe packets to make fairy doors or advent- calendar windows. Cover with paper to paint, fix a picture to the back or cut a hole in a box to fix over for a dolly house. You can make it with the children.”
  • RACHEL LANE, from Coventry, says: “Buy women’s dresses and skirts from the charity shop instead of baby clothes. You can create a unique outfit for next to nothing and help a charity, too.”
