Plusnet to increase broadband prices for THOUSANDS of customers by £12 a year in June

The broadband company are changing their prices on June 5. But don't worry, if you are affected you have 30 days to leave your contract penalty free

PLUSNET is hiking the price of broadband for thousands of customers by an extra £12 a year.

Eleven of its broadband packages will be affected from June 5 but there are ways of dodging the hikes.

The broadband and mobile company are currently contacting all affected customers to let them know about the price hikes.

If you signed up for Plusnet broadband before March 4 2018 or you changed your contract or switched your deal with Plusnet before June 5 2018 then you will be affected.

Often, firms will charge you a fee for leaving your contract early, but Plusnet has offered to let customers get out of their contracts without paying a penalty.

To get out of your contract for free you have to wait for Plusnet to email you saying will be affected by the price rises.

Then you will have 30 days to tell them that you want to leave, and within 30 days of them receiving your email then you'll be able to leave your contract completely penalty free.

Ewan Taylor-Gibson, Broadband Expert at comparison website uSwitch.com said: “Many people are caught off guard when their broadband bills suddenly go up - but the key is to know what to do and when you can do it."

“Consumers really are in the driving seat because when prices are raised, they have 30 days from the date of notification to legally cancel the contract and move to a new provider without penalty. This applies to price rises on both broadband packages and line rental.

"If you’ve missed the deadline, don’t panic. Most broadband contracts are 12 or 18 months long and so if you haven’t moved in the past year and a half, you may well be out-of-contract. This could also be the reason your bill has gone up."

"The best broadband deals are usually reserved for new customers and by switching providers you will qualify for these introductory rates."

If you are planning on switching, get out while you can as Plusnet will also be putting up some of their charges for leaving your contract early up to £12.

So if you want to leave take advantage of the 30 day penalty free period.

Although you should be aware that lots of other broadband providers have been putting their prices up so only switch if you can find yourself a better deal.

A NEW broadband contract might catch your eye online. But whatever you do don't jump in.

 

  • Shop around and compare - Use a price comparison site like  or  to see what deal would be best based on your internent needs.
  • Check your speeds - To compare properly you'll need to know what speed your currently getting.  Advertised speeds for broadband are just that - there's no gurantee you'll get the speed the firm say.
  • Contact your new provider - Once you've found a decent deal simply contact the new firm. In most cases your new firm will sort out the whole transfer for you and you won't need to do anything. If you're switching to or from a provider which doesn't use the Openreach network - like Virign Media - then you will have to contact your current provider to cancel.
  • Get online - Typical costs for your new package to be installed can be around £60 but your new provider will let you know this before you agree to anything. In most cases an enginner won't need to visit your home unless they need to install a new phone line for example, so you'll only be without broadband for a few hours.
