MCDONALD'S customers in London and Stevenage are being charged up to 40p more for a Big Mac because of where they live.

Leicester, Mansfield, West Bromwich and Wrexham also charge the cheapest for a Big Mac.

Generally, branches in the north of the capital city are cheaper than they are in London so it's not surprising that it's in the capital where you'll find the most expensive Big Mac.

But it is surprising that a branch outside of the capital city, Stevenage, also charges £3.29 for the snack.

The research by also revealed that some restaurants charge more for exactly the same burger, even though they're in the same city.

One branch in Ludgate Hill, City of London charges up to £3.39 for a Big Mac but restaurants less than a mile away in Covent Garden, Westminster, Holloway and Holborn charge £3.19 - 20p less.

There are 1,250 McDonald's restaurants in the UK and the research only looked up Big Mac prices at 50 of them, so you might be able to find it cheaper or more expensive elsewhere.

But the numbers do show that some customers will be penalised on price depending on where they live.

The Sun Online contacted McDonald's who put the price differences down to how the franchises operate.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: "We offer guidance around pricing, but ultimately our franchisees decide on those which are set, based on a number of factors including ongoing operational costs depicted by each site.

"We and our franchisees pride ourselves on providing good quality food, at affordable prices up and down the country and work to keep differences to a minimum."

It's not unusual for franchises to charge different prices than other branches.
