Ronald Barton, 88, who has lived on the street for 59 years, said: "I think the street is around 100 years old and is still standing whereas other houses in a lot better condition have been pulled down.

"Living here is alright, it has had its ups and downs. It's been a nice, cheap house to run."

TV engineer Ian Gibbons, 58, who has lived in the village for almost 50 years said: "It does surprise me that Verdun Terrace is the cheapest street in the country. That can't be bad!

"They're good little properties if you spend a bit of money on them. The main problem is the lack of access for vehicles."

He continued: "What you see is what you get. You don't have any room to improve a house there but if you just want to go and live it's fine.

"There used to be five rows of houses but there are only two left standing - Verdun Terrace is one of them. There is now grass and trees between the two streets where the others used to be.

"It is a beautiful village, it's as good as any other village in the area.

"There used to be 13 pubs on the Main Street, now there is only one. They have just disappeared over the last 20 years."

John Cockerill, who owns a butcher's shop in the village, has lived in the area all his life.

The 74-year-old said: "They could be the cheapest houses but it is not the worst place to live. I think £18,233 for a house there is cheap.

"For a starter home it would do as long as you were able to sell it again if you want to better yourself.

"The houses are alright, the problem with the street is the roads. The front street is soil and the back street is all cobbles and pot holes - but I could find a place that is worse!"
