TODAY is the start of Water Saving Week, urging us to cut bills and save money.
The standard UK water charge is expected to rise by two per cent this year, meaning households are paying £405 on average.
Tim Robertson, of specialist water saving firm Save Water Save Money, says: “Many people don’t realise only one per cent of the world’s water can be turned into fresh drinking water.
“It’s vital we look after what we do have. Saving water isn’t about taking fewer showers, but making your water use more efficient.” Follow these tips to feel flush.
1. Using a washing-up bowl to clean plates or cutlery twice a day, rather than having the hot tap running, could save £25 a year on your gas and £30 on your metered water bill.

2. Shorten your showers. The average person spends just over eight minutes in the shower. Cutting a minute off will save £120 a year for an average four-person metered household.

3. Turning off the taps when you brush your teeth could save a family of four a bathful of water every day.

4. Got a leaky loo? Fix it and save 400 litres — five full bathtubs — of water a day and £300 a year.

5. Change your old, inefficient shower head for a water- efficient version and save up to £75 on gas bills and around £120 on metered water bills for a family of four.
