Tesco Bank cancels THOUSANDS of customers’ credit cards after suspected fraud breach

The cards have been automatically reissued, with the replacements cards arriving within five days and a week.

A spokesman for the bank told The Sun Online that the move was a precautionary measure based on the possibility that customer details' could have been compromised by a third party.

He added it was a "small amount" of it credit card customer base was affected.

The bank took similar action in December, when it cancelled hundreds of customer cards - again due to "fraud protection measures."

The spokesman said: "We take the security of our customers' accounts very seriously and take every measure possible to protect customers from fraudulent activity.

"As a result of routine industry-wide fraud protection measures, we have reissued a number of credit cards as a precautionary measure.

"We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused as a result."

Hannah Maundrell, editor of money.co.uk said: "This is undoubtedly frustrating for Tesco credit card customers, but ultimately this is a good move to protect their users from fraud.

"Unfortunately credit card fraud is on the rise, and everyone needs to be extra vigilant to make sure their money stays safe.

"Your bank will never contact you by email asking you for your personal details. If you receive a call from your bank asking you to confirm your personal details and you weren’t expecting a call, hang up and call the bank back.

"Remember to check your credit report regularly for searches you can’t explain and if you spot any unusual transactions tell your bank immediately."

Back in 2016, an "unprecedented" hacking attack on Tesco Bank led to money being stolen from 20,000 customers was.

Over 40,000 Tesco Bank accounts had suspicious activity over one weekend, of which half had money taken.
