Taste test reveals best supermarket hot cross buns – and it might surprise you
HOT cross buns from Morrisons have trounced those from rivals, including Marks & Spencer, to take the crown in a blind taste test.
The supermarket was crowned the winner with its Best Extra Fruity Hot Cross Buns, which cost £1 for a pack of four.
Experts from foodie magazine tested 11 different products in the Traditional category, and 10 in the Alternative category.
They have revealed their five best buys, giving shoppers plenty of time to work up an appetite before Easter.
Morrisons led a field including Lidl, the Co-op, Iceland and Aldi as well as M&S.
Its carby treats were praised for their "plump fruit, attractive glaze and spice" and their great value for money.
Lidl came second with its Deluxe Hot Cross Bun, which cost 99p for a pack of four.
Luxury Hot Cross Buns from Mark& Spencer - which will set you back £1.70 for a pack of four - ranked third.
Aldi's ranked fifth with its 99p traditional hot cross Buns.
Stefan Kaczmarczyk, from Morrisons said: “These buns are made at our own bakery, using a recipe packed with currants, sultanas & raisins, citrus zest and oil from Florida oranges."
It's worth noting that Marks & Spencer ranked first in the alternative category with its salted caramel & chocolate hot cross buns.
The sweet treats cost £1.70 for a 260g pack of four.
A staple of springtime hot cross buns are enjoyed at Easter with the tradition dating back hundreds of years.
If you're looking for other alternatives, Lidl upped the stakes this Easter by bringing out hot cross bun flavoured ice-cream and it is already available in stores.
