LIDL is currently planning a massive expansion of its stores in the UK, spending more than a billion to open 50 new branches and regenerate 30 existing stores.

But if you’re already one of the lucky ones who has one of the German supermarkets around the corner, our Sun Savers Savvy Shopper Sophia shares what you need to know before hitting up your local store - and nabbing the best bargains ahead of Easter.

1) Grab a trolley

OK it might sound obvious but let's be honest - you'll start off your shop with a basket, but within five minutes it will be spilling over with bargains and you'll wish you nabbed a trolley before you started. Take it from us - you won't be able to resist Lidl's treats and you’ll need a trolley.

2) Expect the unexpected

Lidl is known for more than just its groceries - it also has an ever-changing selection of weird and wonderful limited edition goodies. You’ll end up coming out with things you didn’t go in for and things you didn’t know you needed. Ploughman’s plum chutney, a 50L compressor or a steam iron, anyone? In store this week we spotted an entire unicorn range - from tape dispenser and baking moulds to slippers and stationery. Customers have been known to queue out of the shop for Lidl's limited edition ranges, so get in there quick if you see something you like.

3) Embrace the bakery

It’s the first thing you’ll smell when you walk in, and it’s absolutely glorious. But Lidl hack alert - pick up your baked goods just before you hit the checkout at the END of your shop, so that it’s lovely and warm for you when you leave the store. Sun Savers recommends the Maple & Pecan Twist… mmm.

4) Go upmarket

Lidl deluxe range is not to be scoffed at. More luxurious than the store’s regular products, the price tag won’t scare you away, with four scotch beef quarter pounders for £2.49. We were eyeing up the new buffalo mozzarella and semi-dried tomato sourdough pizzas for £3 each. The Deluxe New York Cheesecake is also award-winning. That’s our Friday night sorted!

5) Ditch the brands

One of Lidl’s biggest selling-points is its copycat brands, which are near identical to the real thing. Its chocolate hazelnut spread, jaffa cakes and bixies (Weetabix) can all give the big name brands a run for their money - with the choco hazelnut spread one of the best we’ve found as a Nutella competitor (and believe us when we say we are Nutella connoisseurs).

It's that simple!

6) Be brand smart

If you are partial to a big name brand, they’re all there too - including your household favourites like Marmite and Nesquik. But try and stock up on the Lidl-own stuff if you can as it’s way cheaper that way.

7) Be beautiful

Want beauty without the price tag? Lidl’s Cien range is an absolute bargain as just as good as the products you’d find in any drugstore. Dupe alert! The Cien hand cream and Suddenly Madame Glamour perfume smell just like Chanel Mademoiselle, saving you bundles of dosh.

8) Put your health first

If you’re looking to ditch the junk food, Lidl is a great supermarket to get your health kick, with plenty of meat, fish, fruit, veg, nuts and yoghurt for sale. But who said fruit and veg had to be boring? Lidl recently won a top marketing award for inspiring children to eat fresh produce with its Oaklands Fun Size range. The products feature playful names and colourful characters in mini sizes, including snack tomatoes, broccoli trees and unicorn carrots. We've been known to shove one of the sweet potato piggies into the oven for a quick dinner.

9) Wine not?

A red wine from Lidl was recently crowned one of the best in the world – and it costs just £7. The Fortezza Dei Colli Chianti Classico Reserva is just one of Lidl’s award-winning wines, with its sparkling wine - the Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc - ranked among the best in the world too, costing six times less than other Champagnes that triumphed. But it's not just about wine, with its spirits one to look out for too - its cut-price French Grain Ignis Vodka is award-winning, as is its Hortus Artisan London Dry Gin. Race you to the checkout.

10) Get floral

The Lidl Flower Market is a cheap, quick and easy way to add some colour to your home, with awards to match - it won the Fresh Flower Retailer Of The Year in the 2017 Retail Industry Awards. The supermarket has also just launched budget-friendly flowers in time for Mother’s Day, with prices starting from just £3 We've also read that one bride used a £12 Lidl bouquet for her wedding - and it looked just as good as the real thing.
