We dispel common energy myths about heating your home — plus how to claim your free fiver
WHAT is the best way to keep your home warm if you are shivering from the winter weather?
We have teamed up with the Energy Saving Trust (EST) to tackle common energy myths about heating your property.
- Leave the heating on a low temperature all day. Many believe leaving the heating on low all the time means better value for money as your boiler uses less energy by being on a low heat. But you will save energy and cash by only having the heating on when you need it. Use a timer to set your heating to come on when you need it.
- Reaching for the thermostat will warm up your home quicker. Most of us will turn it up to the highest setting to get the home warm as quickly as possible. But your thermostat only sets the temperature — so it will heat up at the same rate whatever heat you have it at. Turning down your thermostat by one degree can help save around £80 a year on your energy bill.
- Using an electric heater for a few hours is cheaper than central heating. These things eat money and are one of the most expensive ways you can heat your home, especially if you are using it on a regular basis. How much extra you pay will depend on how much you use it — and how much you pay for your electricity. But it won’t help you save cash.
- Wrapping cling-film on your windows will help you save money on bills. In theory, this tactic works. Blocking any gaps around your windows will stop drafts but you will not see much, if any, saving. Consider using draught excluders instead or getting double glazing installed as a better way to stop draughts and wasted cash.
