One in four of us now has a second source of income to make ends meet or pay for little luxuries.

And one in three side-hustlers in a recent study said their extra job was more fulfilling than their main work.

Peter Watton of , which carried out that poll, says: “With the increasing cost of living, Brits are having to take up side hustles to earn extra cash.

“While it is great that Brits are using their passions to earn extra income, it is important to remember to declare any income over £1,000 to ensure you don’t get in trouble with the taxman.”

Here is how to go about starting up your own side hustle.

1. Work out what you want. Need a few extra quid to get by? Or are you saving up for something special? Do you want to try out a new career before quitting your current job?
2. Remember, it will take time to build up a business. Assess how much spare time you have before you begin, then work out what you earn per hour. Ensure it pays more than a basic part-time job to make it worthwhile.
3. Sort any official paperwork or insurance. If you are renting out a room or your driveway, for instance, speak to your insurer first.
4. Making items to sell? Remember, it will cost you to buy components or ingredients before you see cash coming back in.
5. Look abroad. Sites such as eBay and Etsy mean you can sell internationally, so think about what shoppers might want beyond the UK.
6. Do something you enjoy! Then you will be happy while you make money at the same time.
