The German discounter has also promised to match the Living Wage Foundation's recommended rate of £8.75 nationally and £10.20 in London for all its employees.

Aldi has opened 76 new stores during the last 12 months, bringing the total number to 762 as part of its aim to have 1,000 open in the UK by 2022.

Matthew Barnes, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland,: “Our store colleagues are the cornerstone of our business. Without their hard work and dedication day in, day out, we would be unable to provide customers with the lowest grocery prices in the UK.”

The supermarket today revealed that it sold 4million mince pies in the run-up to Christmas, helping it generate over £10billion in sales last year in the UK and Ireland for the first time.

Mr Barnes added: “This was our busiest-ever Christmas as millions of festive shoppers switched to Aldi from more expensive food retailers."

The pay increase follows a similar rise last year when the firm upped hourly rates for over 3,000 staff.

In November, rival Lidl announced a pay rise for more than 16,000 employees.

Staff at the supermarket will earn £8.75 per hour nationally and £10.20 in London starting on March 1.

While Tesco pledged to give its staff a 10.5 per cent pay rise over the next two years.
