You’ll be able to switch mobile phone providers by sending a free text – but not until July 2019
Customers will also no longer have to pay for their old and new service at the same time - saving Brits £10million a year
MOBILE phone users will be able to switch providers simply by sending a free text message, regulator Ofcom has confirmed today.
It wants to make it quicker and easier for customers unhappy with their current company to switch to a new firm.
It found many users are put-off from switching providers due to the hassle, with one of the biggest hurdles having to speak to their current provider over the phone, who will likely try and make them stay.
Around 2.5 million customers (38 per cent) say they experienced at least one major problem when trying to switch, while 70 per cent had some difficulty.
But under the new rules, customers will be able to swap firms without having to speak to their current provider by requesting a unique switching code via text or online.
Their existing provider must then immediately respond with either a PAC code for those who want to keep their number or a cancellation code for those who want a new one.
The text will also include information like early termination charges or any outstanding hand-set costs you'll have to pay.
The customer can then pass this on to their new provider, who must arrange for the switch to be completed within one working day.
But the new rules won't be in place until June 2019 to give providers enough time to get ready for the changes.
Lindsey Fussell, of Ofcom, said: "Too many people are put off by the hassle of switching mobile provider. Our changes will make it quicker and easier for mobile phone users to get a better deal.
"Customers will control how much contact they have with their current mobile provider, preventing companies from delaying and frustrating the switching process."
Under the plans - which were initially announced in May - providers will also be banned from charging for notice periods after the switch date.
This will put an end to customers paying for old and new services at the same time, and will save Brits an estimated £10million a year, Ofcom said.
Last month, Ofcom announced mobile and broadband customers will get their account automatically credited if they experience poor service.
You'll get £25 if an engineer cancels an appointment with less than 24 hours notice or doesn't turn up and £8 for each day your service is not repaired.
The compensation system will also come into force in 2019.
How the new texting service will work
Here's how the new switching service will work.
- Request a switching code by texting a free number
- The existing provider will respond immediately with one of two codes depending on if the customer wants to keep your number of not. The text will also inlcude any outstanding charges they'll have to pay
- The code will be valid for 30 days - the customer can pass on the code to their new provider when they place an order, who will then carry out the switch within one working day
