Pret a Manger will knock 50p off ANY hot drink if you bring in a reusable cup

Britain’s coffee addiction is creating an estimated 25,000 tons of waste with 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups used in the UK each year

BRITS who bring their own reusable cup to Pret A Manger will get 50p off their tea or coffee starting from today.

The sandwich shop’s customers have been entitled to a 25p discount on hot beverages if they bring in their own cup.

But from today coffee-lovers will get their discount doubled to 50p.

Chief executive Clive Schlee said he hoped the move would encourage customers to reduce rather than rely on recycling and would "make a difference."

He tweeted today: "I'm delighted you can now get 50p off a hot drink when you bring your reusable cup to @Pret. I hope this will make a difference."

Pret's decision means the chain’s filter coffee would cost just 49p for customers bringing in their own cup.

You would also be paying £1.65 for a regular coffee latte, down from £2.15.

Mr Schlee made the announcement in a blog post in December.

He wrote: "We debated whether charging people for using paper cups felt right.

"We decided that it goes against our instincts as we would prefer to be generous to our customers than to tax them. Let's see what impact the new discount has."

Mr Schlee has also said Pret has plans to launch its own reusable cup later this year.

Britain’s coffee addiction is creating an estimated 25,000 tons of waste with 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups used in the UK each year.

Most of the disposable cups used by major coffee chains can't be recycled easily.

That's because they are coated with a plastic lining that cannot be separated out in a standard recycling mill.

Major brands like Starbucks, Costa and bakery chain Paul also give a 25p discount to customers bringing their own reusable cups.

Caffe Nero, McDonald's, Pret A Manger, Starbucks and Costa also signed up to a scheme to collect and recycle more of the current type of cups.

The move comes amid rising concerns about the problem of plastic waste in the oceans, harming and killing wildlife and entering the food chain, highlighted most recently in the BBC's Blue Planet II documentary.

It follows the introduction of a 5p charge on single-use plastic carrier bags, which is credited with driving down how many are used by 85 per cent, and calls to bring in charges on items ranging from plastic drinks bottles to disposable coffee cups.

Chancellor Philip Hammond signalled that taxes or charges could be levied on single-use plastics to help the UK lead the way on tackling "the scourge" littering the environment in the recent Budget.
