IF you’re looking to pick up Christmas essentials sooner rather than later -  Marks and Spencer has just launched a 3 for 2 deal that could help you spread the cost.

Customers can visit their local store to take advantage of the offer, which will be running from today (December 5) to December 25.

The deal means shoppers can simply mix and match from the selected range of products and receive the cheapest one for free.

And it includes a 180g  jar of goose fat and a 215g pot of chestnut chutney - both worth £3 individually.

A 195g jar of brandy butter, which is selling for £2 on its own, and a 300g jar of cranberry and port Sauce, which is worth £3, are also part of the offer.

It's worth noting that if you don't need all these items, it might cost you less to buy them individually at another store.

For example, Asda is currently offering a slightly smaller 230g jar of cranberry sauce with port for just £1.

Meanwhile, a bigger jar of goose fat is available for £2.39 at rival Waitrose - that's 61p cheaper than at M&S.

Still, if you're hosting a Christmas dinner for the whole family and you prefer to buy all your groceries from the same store - it's worth checking out what M&S has on offer.

The supermarket is running a range of separate deals in the run-up to Christmas.

For example, shoppers can also get two £3.75 bottles of Bucks Fizz for £5 or a 75cl bottle of Prosecco for £9 instead of £12.

M&S is the only supermarket to have cut the cost of Christmas dinner - down from £49.40 last year to £38.43 this year, according to Good Housekeeping's annual Christmas Dinner Price survey.

The survey looked at the price of 11 Christmas dinner essentials, including turkey, mince pies and cranberry sauce, across ten supermarkets.

It found that nine supermarkets are more expensive than last year, with Aldi, Morrisons and Iceland all increasing their prices by over 13 per cent.

This year's cheapest basket came from Lidl at just £25.53 for a family of eight, or £3.19 a head.

That compares with £22.03 for last year's cheapest, which was from Aldi.

How to cut the price of your Christmas dinner:

BARGAIN hunters should compare the price of their shopping BEFORE they leave the house.

  • Shoppers can use grocery comparison website before shopping.
  • The website lets shoppers compare prices at Tesco, Asda, Ocado, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Poundland, Iceland, Aldi, Lidl, Amazon, Boots, Superdrug, M&S and Poundstretcher.
  • Visit the website, add items to your basket and it will compare the prices and tell you which supermarket is cheapest based on your shopping list.
  • You can view the special offers at each and for luxury Christmas dinner items you can compare the prices individually and decide whether it’s worth a special trip to that supermarket to pick up a bargain.
