A BOTTLE of red wine from Lidl that sells for £6.99 has been ranked among the best after beating wines costing more than TWICE the price.
The took home one of 14 gold awards at this year's International Wine Challenge, described as the "Oscars of the wine world".
The budget retailer's Chianti was also the lowest-priced supermarket wine to win a gold medal in the entire competition.
Made mainly from the native Italian Sangiovese grape, Lidl's Chianti was tested against similar wines costing over twice the price, like the Berry Bros. & Rudd Chianti Classico at £15.50, which won Bronze.
Chianti Classico Riserva wines are typically full-bodied and intense, with strong red fruit and spiced aromas. They can retail for up to £45 at .

Lidl described its Chianti as a full-bodied dry red with mature, fruitcake-scented flavours.
It pairs well with roast Turkey, steak or pork chops, according to the supermarket.

Paul Gibson, from Lidl UK, said: "The fact that our Chianti Classico Riserva was the lowest-priced supermarket wine to win gold means our customers can be assured that amazing wines don’t have to break the bank, at Christmas time and beyond."
It isn't the first time the discount supermarket received attention for stocking award-winning wines at a budget price.

Earlier this year, Lidl’s sparkling wine - the Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc - ranked among the best after scooping the same award as nearly 40 Champagnes costing over six times the price.
The same accolade was received by almost 40 top champagnes including the Veuve Clicquot 2008 vintage Champagne, which sells for more than £50 a bottle at Sainsbury’s, Majestic and Tesco.
More recently its cut price vodka - which is £20 cheaper than a bottle of Grey Goose - scooped the first price at a prestigious industry awards.
