Which RBS bank branches are closing, how many jobs will be lost and why are the closures taking place?
The majority taxpayer-owned bank is set to shut down a raft of branches as more and more customers switch to online banking
RBS is set to shut a total of 216 branches in a bid to cut costs as more customers move online and away from face-to-face banking - leaving hundreds without jobs.
Here's the latest on the closures and a list of the branches affected.
How many jobs will be lost?
The Royal Bank of Scotland, which is still 72 per cent owned by the taxpayer, initially said 162 branches would close, adding that 792 jobs will be lost as a result of the branch closures.
But on September 5, 2018, it announced it would close a further 54 branches in January 2019, axing a further 258 jobs and leaving just 54 RBS banks open in England and Wales.
On September 28, 2018, the bank said two of 60 threatened branches in Scotland will remain open.
An RBS spokesman said the decision came because a growing number of customers are now using online banking rather than high street branches.
He said: "More and more of our customers are choosing to do their everyday banking online or on mobile.
"Since 2014 the number of customers using our branches across the UK has fallen by 40 per cent and mobile transactions have increased by 73 per cent over the same period.
"Over 5 million customers now use our mobile banking app and one in five only bank with us digitally."
However Unite union national officer Rob MacGregor said that the move could effectively signal the end of banking in branches.
He said: "The Royal Bank of Scotland has decided to decimate its bank branch network. Now serious questions need to be asked about whether these closures mark the end of branch network banking.
"This announcement will forever change the face of banking in this country resulting in over a thousand staff losing their jobs and hundreds of high streets without any banking facilities.
"Why is the Government signing off this alarming branch closure programme?"
On May 1 Rob added: "The reality is that as a result of these planned closures the overwhelming majority of customers will find themselves without access to full banking facilities and in the most extreme examples some will find themselves having to make a round trip of circa 130 miles."
