A NEW bargain shop has opening in Stoke-on-Trent to help low-income families with the cost of food.
The store has been set up by mum and ex-chef Nikki Barrett and it sells out-of-date but perfectly edible food for up to 50 per cent less than normal supermarkets.
Some of the bargains sold by the shop include tins of tuna paste and veg for 50p, Kellogs Cornflakes for 80p and a pack of salted caramel cupcakes for 50p.
The store will be open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm.
Nikki claims that all the food is really cheap and "much cheaper than supermarkets" and that shoppers can cut their bills considerably by going there.
The 37-year-old told : “The opening went really well, I was so pleased.
“Me and my husband have always worked. But sometimes, unexpected things happen that cost money, like your washing machine breaks down. Then you have a choice between putting petrol in your car to get to work, or feeding your kids.
“I thought there must be many others like me. I want to give something back and help those struggling families.”
Most of the stock comes from distributors who supply supermarkets but the stock was slightly damaged or has incorrect labels.
Other items may be past its sell-by date but perfectly fine to eat.
The shop is part of a franchise of Affordable Foods, which was originally set up by Newquay businesswoman Charlotte Danks in 2015.
The 22-year-old businesswoman previously revealed how she had been spat on in the street after opening up a chain of budget 25p shops.
The shops follow in the success of bargain food websites like Approved Food and Clearance XL.
