Terry’s Chocolate Oranges cost TWICE as much as they did last year in some stores

Trade journal The Grocer found that shoppers at Sainsbury’s will pay £1.95 compared to last Christmas's price of £1

FESTIVE favourite Terry’s Chocolate Orange has almost doubled in price in some stores.

Sainsbury’s shoppers will pay £1.95 compared to £1 last Christmas.

The average is £1.34 as some stores run promotions and others sell at full price, trade journal The Grocer found.

Those who go to Morrisons will pay the least, at 90p for the 75g treat.

Overall, Christmas chocolate prices are down around four per cent, analysis of 944 products found.

But shrinkflation — smaller packets, same price — is likely to confuse shoppers.

Morrisons is selling a 680g tub of Mars Celebrations for £4.72, which would have bought 750g last year.

Tesco is charging £5 (£4 in 2016) for the variety pot while Sainsbury’s has kept its price at £5.

Quality Street and Cadbury’s Milk Tray also have mixed deals.

The Grocer said: “After a year of inflation, shoppers are more likely to be interested in whether prices are rising.”
