Cadbury's Festive Favourites selection box, which contains six bars, has been reduced in weight from 208g to 194g but still sells for £4.

Similarly, McVitie's Family Circle biscuits box still costs £6 but has dropped in weight from 720g to 670g, reported .

The Freddo selection box is now 139g. having been 154g, but still retails for £2 while the Victoria Biscuits box is down 50g to 600g yet is still on shelves for £5.

The trend has been dubbed "shrink-flation" by consumer groups who claim the public are being ripped off.

Marc Gander, from the Consumer Action Group, said: "Shrinking products is a sneaky way of putting up costs for consumers because pack sizes shrink but prices don’t."

A spokesperson for Mondelez, which now owns Cadbury, confirmed the weight of the Festive Favourites box had reduced but that the number of bars was still the same.

They said: "We have updated the range available in our selection boxes.

"This meant the weights of our products changed and while some increased in size, some decreased but the number or remain the same. The retail price has therefore remained the same."

A spokesperson for McVitie's said: "The rising cost of ingredients and currency changes means products are getting more expensive to make, and we aren’t always able to absorb the costs."
