Price of milk to go up by 10p per four pints due to dairy closures

MILK prices are on the rise due to a shortage of supply from dairy farmers due to closures.

A spokesman for the store said it had tried to hold prices down but "needed to respond when there were ongoing cost pressures".

Industry experts say that other supermarkets are likely to follow.

The wholesale price of butter has already gone up by 73 per cent in the last year due to milk supply restrictions.

Many dairy closed after a price war started by the supermarkets two years ago.

It pushed down the price paid to farmers as supermarkets battled to keep prices low.

The price increase has been welcomed by the National Farmers’ Union dairy board chairman Michael Oakes.

He said the price was closer to "reflecting the true cost of milk production".

The 10p rise represents the biggest increase for four pints in big supermarkets since the start of a milk price war in 2014.

The price of four pints of milk rose by 4p in October to 99p - it's highest level since January 2015.

Farming industry figures show UK milk deliveries dropped by nearly 10 per cent last year.
