Our top tips for saving money this Halloween — plus find out how to win £5,000 with Sun Savers
FRIGHT night Halloween is now the third biggest celebration after Christmas and Easter – and it can leave bank accounts looking very scary indeed.
On average, we fork out £25 on parties, costumes or treats but one in six spends more than £50 — a collective national bill topping £320million.
But unlike Christmas and Easter, shoppers do not tend to budget or save up for Halloween — so can easily get spooked at the cashpoint.
Here, we share eight great Halloween hacks that are all treats and no tricks.
1 Change your light bulbs. For cheap and easy decorations, choose orange, green or purple light bulbs. Coloured bulbs cost from around £2.99 at local hardware stores or specialist online shops and can be used each year — so store them carefully and bring them out year on year.
2 Pool resources. Get together with friends and hold a Halloween party, asking everyone to bring a bottle or a dish to eat.
3 Swap costumes. Kids only wear Halloween outfits once or twice, so team up with other parents to pass on to other children.
4 Do a DIY job. Need a last-minute costume? Raid your wardrobe or kids’ dressing-up box. Jazz up a basic black dress with spooky witch make-up or build a vampire outfit from a white shirt and black shawl.
5 Try the charity shop. From old wedding dresses perfect for vampire brides to gothic velvet suits, you can pick up an amazing outfit for a couple of quid.
6 Swoop on pound shops. There’s no need to pay big-brand prices. This year, pound stores have huge stocks of everything you need, from face paints, party decorations and sweets to paper plates and cups.
7 Ditch the sweets. Hand out stickers instead of chocs to trick-or-treaters. Not only will their parents thank you, a big roll of stickers costs from just 99p — cheaper than splashing out on sweets.
8 Get crafty. Search online for “free Halloween printables” and then get the children to have creative fun by colouring and making their own decorations. It keeps the little ones out of trouble while you are setting up the party, as well.
