HIRE CAR CRACKDOWN

Two car hire websites are being investigated over hidden fee claims

Customers complained that they were hit by unexpected charges for fuel, late-pickups and one-way journeys

TWO car hire websites - which have not been named - are being probed over claims they charge hidden fees and are currently under investigation by the competition watchdog.

Motorists have complained they were hit with unexpected extra charges for fuel, late pick-ups or drop-offs, young drivers and one-way journeys.

The Competition and Markets Authority is concerned the sites are breaking consumer law by hiding the true costs of hire when customers search for a deal.

The watchdog came under fire this summer for failing to take action over a wave of complaints about car hire rip-offs.

But it confirmed it was carrying out a review in early 2018 and could take action against more firms.

It also revealed it was investigating complaints about foreign care hire firms which overcharge holidaymakers.

The CMA is expected to name the two price comparison sites in the new year.

It has also written to 40 companies telling them to make prices clear and accurate.

Car hire sites must include any extra charges in the first price they quote and make clear how much fuel will cost.

They should also warn customers about any high excess costs or deposits required.

CMA project director James MacBeth said: “No one should be misled or face unexpected charges, whether they choose to book directly with the car hire company or through a comparison site.

“While we have seen improvements in the way car hire comparison sites quote prices, we are still concerned that some companies may not have faced up to their legal obligations.

“We expect this sector to provide clearer information about the true costs, and to explain upfront what customers will actually pay.”

Alex Neill from consumer watchdog Which? said: "It's not right that consumers are being hit with hidden charges and unexpected fees when hiring a car, so its good to see the CMA taking action.

"Car hire sites must improve their practices and be upfront about any charges so consumers can make an informed choice at the time of booking."
