Marks & Spencer launches wine with just HALF the calories of a normal bottle

Sumika red and white have only 50 cals per glass - meaning wine lovers can enjoy a sip while watching their weight

MARKS & Spencer has launched a new wine with only half the calories of a normal bottle.

Weight-watching wine-lovers will be able to enjoy guilt-free glasses of Sumika Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Rosé.

The £7.50 vino contains only 50 calories per 100ml glass — whereas a normal tipple has up to 100.

Sumika - which means "light" in Japanese - was made exclusively for M&S by Journey's End winery in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Despite being low-cal, experts have insisted the wine has not compromised on taste or its 8.5 per cent abv alcohol content — unlike other lighter drops.

Less boozy wines are normally made from cheap blends that are passed through complex spinning processes to draw out the alcohol.

But Rollo Dabb, Journey's End director, used the same process only with high quality wine mixed with non-fermented grape juice.

The result is a tasty tipple without the calories.

The white Sauvignon Blanc is described as "light, elegant and refreshing with flavours of elderflower, passionfruit and peach."

And the Shiraz is "rounded and smooth with a hint of oak, this wine has mocha, blackberry and spice notes", according to the retailer.

Jilly Goolden, a leading wine critic, said: "This is a breakthrough.

"So far low-alcohol and low-calories have been a great disappointment. Some are disgusting.

"But this is a great step forward."
